Project Description

Completed in 2011, the Talmage Residence Hall and University Commons marked a transformative moment as Heidelberg University’s first newly constructed facility in over 45 years. Designed by MKC Architects, this innovative project blends modern student housing with a vibrant community space to support both academic and social development. The facility features a 120-bed residence hall and a 9,000-square-foot student commons, each crafted to elevate the student experience and campus culture.

SOPHOMORE-LIVING STUDENT DORMITORIES

MKC Architects design focuses on fostering meaningful interaction, academic support, and personal growth. The residence hall is composed of five two-story pods, each accommodating 24 students—12 on each floor. These pods surround a two-story communal living and gathering space, which includes:

  • Loft-style seating and a balcony overlook

  • A fully equipped kitchen for shared meals and community building

  • Comfortable lounge spaces for informal gatherings

  • Dedicated study areas to support Heidelberg’s academic mission

This pod-style layout encourages both independence and collaboration, offering sophomores a unique residential experience designed to deepen their connection to the university.

THE UNIVERSITY COMMONS

Functioning independently from the residence hall but fully integrated into campus life, the University Commons offers students a welcoming, multi-functional space to gather, study, and relax. This 9,000 sq. ft. community center includes:

  • A campus café and pub for socializing and casual dining

  • A large great room for campus events and student programs

  • Private study rooms for quiet academic work

  • An outdoor dining patio that expands social opportunities

Whether enjoying a group study session or attending a student event, the commons provides a dynamic setting that supports the diverse needs of the Heidelberg student body.
