In 2002, MKC began work with a planning team of Mt. Vernon parents, teachers, and administrators to design a facility that would support innovative elementary instruction. The 2003 groundbreaking of the Twin Oak Elementary marked the beginning of creating reality from this vision. The future became reality in 2005 when the doors opened to excited students.

The design of this 57,000 sq. ft., PK-5 facility takes advantage of the sites topography, creating a single-story appearance which transitions to two-story spaces in the rear. The public/after-hour entrance is located on the lower level. The facility also features large classrooms, 300-square foot Extended Learning Areas, filled with natural light to provide volunteer friendly spaces for small group work, parent involvement rooms and four instructional resource rooms.
