Committed to supporting the city’s renewal efforts, MKC relocated to the downtown building in late 2004. Originally built as a farmers market in 1916, the structure had most recently been used as a foreign car repair shop.

The renovation respects the building’s character by leaving much of the restored original architecture exposed—including interior brick walls, steel ceiling beams and support columns as well as the two-story glass clerestory original to the building. Even the original front iron gate, intended for farmers’ horse-drawn carts, was maintained.

To this classic backdrop, the MKC design team added new technology, wiring and mechanical systems as well as new safety and security systems. Where windows were replaced, the original position and mullion pattern was maintained. The remodeling of the front lobby area is clean and contemporary, serving as a contrast to the “industrial-loft” feel of the main production area.
